Carv has always believed that better skiers have more fun.
That idea drives everything we build because, when you ski better, every run feels smoother, faster, and more effortless.

Ski:IQ is the foundation of Carv’s coaching system. It gives every skier a single score that captures the quality of their technique and connects how they move to how they improve.

Each year, our Data Science team analyzes more than a billion turns and works with some of the world’s best instructors to refine the Ski:IQ algorithm. The goal is to make it as accurate and insightful as possible so that your score reflects your real progress on snow.

Over the years, Ski:IQ has become the standard for how Carv evaluates great skiing, from your first parallel turns to carving arcs on expert terrain. It is the measure that connects performance with progression.

This year, we asked a new question. How can we make Ski:IQ not just more accurate, but easier to understand? That question became our mission.

All metrics that impact Ski:IQ are shown in the app

The Evolution: Nevado to Wasatch

Last season, Ski:IQ Nevado marked a major leap forward in accuracy.

It was the first time Carv could measure ski technique in terrains such as groomed, uneven, moguls, and powder.

To achieve that, our Data Science team built a powerful machine learning model with more than 30 inputs. It used every Carv metric along with new measurements that described how skis moved through each turn.

The result was a clear improvement in accuracy across every turn type. More than 50,000 skiers saw their Ski:IQ better reflect the quality of their technique.

However, there was a tradeoff. The model became what we call a “black box,” with many behind-the-scenes metrics that weren’t surfaced in the app. This made it harder for skiers to see what drove their score and reduced overall actionability.

That experience shaped our goal for this season. We set out to build a Ski:IQ that is just as accurate, but far more interpretable, fair, and reflective of real-world skiing.

Trust us, the Carv team has been working non-stop to craft the best Ski:IQ imaginable

The Headlines

Ski:IQ Wasatch builds on everything we learned from Nevado with four major improvements that define this season’s release.

Technique-specific models

Each turn type now has its own model designed to evaluate the exact movements that define great skiing in that style. From carving to moguls, Ski:IQ now measures skill in context, paving the way for our new Skills coaching system. (Read more about that here.)

Adding More Context to Your Run

Skiing well on steep, variable, or uneven terrain demands a different level of skill and control. Ski:IQ Wasatch factors in slope pitch and snow surface to recognize that challenge. It evaluates your technique relative to the challenge of the slope, not just the motion itself.

More interpretable

Ski:IQ Wasatch makes it clear how your skiing is being measured so you can understand what drives your score. Every Ski:IQ is broken down into visible metrics in the app. When you improve a metric, your score reflects it.

Rolling Top Eight

Your Ski:IQ is now based on your best eight consecutive turns. There’s no need to stop to lock in your best score, and you’ll receive seamless coaching on any terrain throughout your run.

Models for Every Technique

Skiing is not one movement. The way you ski powder, moguls, or a carve down groomer are all different, each requiring unique movements and timing. Ski:IQ Wasatch reflects that reality.

This season, we built separate models for each turn type: carving, short turns, moguls, powder, parallel, and snowplough. Each model focuses on the specific movements that define great skiing for that terrain or technique.

For example, carving rewards strong edge control and clean arcs, while moguls value rhythm and absorption. Powder highlights smooth flow and float, and short turns emphasize timing and precision on steeper terrain.

This change makes Ski:IQ behave more like a human coach. It understands that skiing well means different things in different conditions and adjusts your score accordingly.

By tuning Ski:IQ for each turn type, we made it more accurate, more fair, and closer than ever to how great instructors think about skiing.

Contextual Shift: Rewarding Skill on Harder Terrain

Not all turns are created equal. Holding strong technique on a steep pitch, in bumps, or through chopped-up snow takes far more control and precision than skiing the same movement on an easy groomer. Ski:IQ Wasatch recognizes that difference.

This year’s model adds new context metrics such as slope pitch and snow difficulty. These allow Ski:IQ to assess not just how well you ski, but how well you ski in challenging conditions.

That means carving clean arcs on black terrain is now valued more than identical turns on a gentle slope. The same is true for moguls, where rhythm, timing, and adaptability become much harder as the terrain gets more complex.

Ski:IQ Wasatch rewards the ability to stay dynamic, balanced, and in control when the mountain demands more.

We are not raising the bar. We are measuring it better.

Interpretable by Design

Ski:IQ Wasatch is the clearest version of Ski:IQ we have ever built.

Every metric that contributes to your score is now visible in the app, so you can see exactly how your skiing is being measured. This helps you understand what matters most for your technique and gives you the tools to focus on real progress.

Last year, Ski:IQ was based on the median of all your individual turn scores; this year, we take the median of your underlying metrics first and calculate Ski:IQ from that profile - making the score far more consistent and interpretable.

With Ski:IQ Wasatch, when you make meaningful improvements to your skiing, you’ll see those improvements reflected in your data.

Each of these metrics links directly to Skills, Carv’s brand new coaching system. Skills take the metrics behind Ski:IQ and turn them into focused, movement-based training so you can build your technique one step at a time.

More visibility means more understanding. Skills turn that understanding into better skiing.

Rolling Top 8 Ski:IQ

The new rolling Ski:IQ system keeps your score focused on what matters most: your best skiing.

Ski:IQ Wasatch now calculates your score using your best eight consecutive turns in a continuous rolling window. This makes the system fairer and more consistent, no matter where or how you ski.

You no longer need to stop mid-run to lock in a good score. Ski:IQ adapts as you move, tracking your technique through changing terrain and delivering coaching feedback without interruption.

This means you can ski from groomers into bumps or powder and continue receiving accurate, relevant feedback the entire time. The experience feels smooth, natural, and connected to the mountain around you.

Your best skiing always counts.

Ski:IQ Badges

And as a cherry on top, we’re rolling out a whole new set of Ski:IQ badges to reward you for leveling up your skiing. You can now see your Ski:IQ for every technique and all your all time best scores right in your profile.

Your friends will see your progress too, so every breakthrough, every new level, and every big day gets the recognition it deserves.

The Takeaway

Every year, Ski:IQ evolves to reflect what great skiing truly looks like. Wasatch takes the biggest step yet, combining clarity, fairness, and accuracy in a way that makes every turn feel meaningful.

Some of us will see our Ski:IQ rise, others may see it fall. That’s a natural part of improving how we measure skiing.

Ski:IQ Wasatch is more interpretable, more balanced, and more rewarding for every skier. From carving to moguls to powder, your Ski:IQ now reflects the context, challenge, and flow of your best turns.

This release marks the most complete expression of Carv’s vision so far — making better skiing simpler, clearer, and more fun.
