About Carv

Carv is on a mission to unlock the enjoyment of better skiing. We use AI, real-time feedback, and sensor-driven data to help skiers improve their technique like never before. Our data science team are building cutting-edge models that transform raw skiing data into real-time coaching for our users.

We’ve collected terabytes of skiing data from nearly 1 billion skiing turns and millions of feedback and response interactions. Your role will be to use your technical knowledge alongside top athletes and instructors to identify the context of someone skiing (eg, the terrain they're skiing on), to identify and categorise the quality of their skiing technique and to optimise the coaching pathways that power Carv’s real time coaching.

This work covers a wide spectrum, such as developing data and annotation processing pipelines, exploratory data analysis, statistical modelling, expert-led feature engineering, training and fine-tuning both small or large machine learning models and working with the latest LLMs.

If you have a background in data science, data visualisation or machine learning, and want to redefine digital sports coaching, we’d love to hear from you.

What You’ll Do

  • Build pipelines to streamline the labelling or use of raw sensor data for training.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis with varied mathematical modelling and statistical approaches to prove out hypotheses.
  • Work with top instructors and athletes to combine the best of their knowledge and insights from the data of thousands of skiers.
  • Build and train models using raw sensor data to improve assessment of ski terrain, skiing technique and coaching quality/effectiveness.
  • Use explainable AI techniques to make models more transparent and simple for users to understand.
  • Help deploy the ML models on constrained mobile devices and continue to make them more efficient.
  • Work closely with the Product and Engineering teams to develop new product features and visualisations.
  • Debug issues and edge cases from customers once algorithms have been deployed.

What We’re Looking For

  • You are a passionate skier, beginner skiers welcome.
  • You have demonstrated your ability to write efficient, maintainable Python.
  • You have an analytical mindset with a strong mathematical background and a solid grounding in statistics, data analysis and hypothesis testing. You can craft exploratory analyses that guide product or model decisions.
  • You have experience creating annotation, data processing and training pipelines for large datasets, preferably in the cloud with providers such as AWS, Azure or GCP.
  • You have experience with Pytorch (or similar ML libraries) in production or research settings. You have deployed a machine learning model to production that has been used by hundreds of users, and have experience training classic models and deep-neural networks.
  • You have a natural interest in Data Science and AI. You keep up-to-date with the latest research and papers.
  • You're a great communicator with an ability to translate technical findings into actionable insights. You're comfortable collaborating with technical and non-technical stakeholders, from coaches to product managers.
  • You have a demonstrated ability to tackle open-ended problems and iterate quickly, particularly with noisy, high-volume or time-series data.
  • Nice-to-have: You have an understanding of ski technique, biomechanics or coaching psychology.
  • You have a relentless bias for action.
  • You have a track-record of excelling in a small-team environment, even better if at a start-up. You easily pivot between research, prototyping and production tasks.

Why Join Carv?

  • Work on a game-changing product that combines AI, biomechanics, and coaching
  • Autonomy and impact—you’ll be a key player in shaping the future of digital sports training
  • Opportunity to work from our Innsbruck office where you can ski with fully subsidised ski tickets
