Software Intern
About the role
We are looking for a software intern to help us create world-class Customer Success and Product teams at Carv by building tools to improve the quality and efficiency of the diagnosis and support we provide. This role is perfect for a graduate or junior software engineer who wants to continue to develop their software skills whilst gaining experience in the many different parts of a startup, and who would also like to travel and work abroad.
Successful applicants will divide their time between two locations as follows:
Innsbruck (3 months): During the peak of the season (December - March) you will have the option of working from our office in Innsbruck, the capital of the beautiful North Tyrol region and a world-renowned snowsports destination. You will be provided with accommodation in our company flat in the city, with easy access to various resorts in Austria (along with a region-wide season pass), and will be in charge of improving tooling for the Customer Success and Product teams covering hardware failure diagnosis, retention analytics and data science errors, along with trying to debug and reproduce failures on the slopes.
London (remaining time): Before and after the season you will be working from our London HQ. This is where you’ll find the product, marketing and operation teams, and you will likely work closely with them depending on projects.
Your main responsibilities:
Whilst we exist to serve Carv skiers, your customer will also be our internal Customer Success, Data Science and Product teams. You will get to know their problems deeply and create tools to help them more effectively create great products and deliver outstanding customer support.
The majority of this work will involve continuing to add functionality to our internal portal (affectionately known as the Lodge) built on the Svelte Javascript framework. Projects will include improving internal mapping and debugging tools, retention analytics, self-serve customer flows and debugging data science algorithm issues.
You will also gain an understanding of the Carv product (both hardware and software) and help deliver technical training to the 24/25 customer success cohort and aid in debugging product issues and answering customer queries when load is particularly high.
When in Innsbruck, you will support ski testing and evaluation and debugging of new prototypes.
Our candidate is someone who:
Has a technical undergraduate degree (eg, Software, Data Science or Engineering) with 1st or Upper 2nd class results, or equivalent software development experience.
We will also consider candidates who are mid-way through their degree and are on track for excellent academic results.
Has strong experience with Javascript or Typescript.
Has familiarity with SQL and developing backend APIs (we use Rust).
Experience with Python.
Can operate autonomously and is highly self-motivated to learn and solve problems.
Has a passion for product development. You are enthusiastic, hardworking and proud of your work.
Has great communication skills and a real empathy for customers and colleagues.
And most importantly, loves to ski - you don’t need to be good, but we do love a passion for the slopes!
Nice to have:
Experience with a frontend language framework (you’ll be developing with Svelte)
- Experience in a customer facing role.
Pay / Benefits
Salary: London Living Wage.
Free accommodation in the company flat in Innsbruck
Innsbruck ski pass, giving you access to all local resorts for the duration of the season
Two return flights between Innsbruck and London
Duration
The duration of the internship will be 7 months, from the start of October 2024 to the end of April 2025.
Sponsorship
We will not be able to sponsor candidates for this role, so you must be legally allowed to work in the UK.
