Skiing is awesome, and the better you are, the more fun it gets. It's our mission to make the mountain your playground.
This season marks one of the biggest jumps we’ve made to date with the Carv system. We’ve focussed on making Carv adapt to the context around you, with terrain detection in the IQ system, active coaching that dynamically levels your real-time training, and more comprehensive tips. All new features will be available through an app update in December this year.
Let's dive in.
Ski:IQ Hintertux
This year’s Ski:IQ system is the biggest jump in accuracy we’ve made since we first launched the IQ system. We know last year's Ski:IQ was brilliant when conditions were perfect, but great skiing is about versatility as well as ability.
Our goal this year was to represent your skiing in a wide range of conditions, as well as representing dynamic, exciting skiing so Carv can help you to look better on snow, no matter your ability level.
Ski:IQ Hintertux
In the past year, we’ve expanded our video dataset by 4x, which means we can train our dataset of 350 million turns to produce the most accurate technique system ever seen. Learn what this means for your scores.
We’ve worked with Ted Ligety and a number of other top-level coaches to develop brand-new metrics that measure your abiltiy to create a dynamic, exciting turn. Learn more.
Our new terrain detection algorithm means we can now assess your technique across a wide range of different types of snow - adjusting your Ski:IQ to account for the challenge of variable snow and steeper pitches.
Ski:IQ Hintertux
This year, terrain became the north star for our Data Science team. If you sent it down a steep pitch, or braved the bumps, we wanted you to be fairly rewarded. You told us that you found it slightly demotivating when Carv scored you down when the conditions became harder.
We’re excited to announce that Carv now calculates a terrain adjustment for each segment you ski - detected in real-time using the data feed from your sensors.
How it works
Carv will reward you with a Ski:IQ multiplier when you send it on steeper, or more variable terrain (bumps, crud and soft snow) - and keep your form together. You’ll see the terrain adjustment on each segment you ski.
This means you’re going to be able to match or maybe even beat your best scores on tough terrain.
But you can't just drop a quick bumps line to get a new high score. You still have to ski with amazing form to beat your high score. We've backtested this to check there are no quick hacks to a great score.
We've developed 3 new metrics that can objectively measure the hallmarks of jaw-dropping skiing.
Early Weight Transfer is a metric that looks at how quickly you can move pressure from your old inside ski to your new outside ski. Our data shows that this is a key hallmark of stylish skiing and enables a stronger and more dynamic turn.
Turn G-Force measures the force you experience. It's a great metric that correlates with fun too. If a fighter pilot can pull 2-4g, how many can you get?
Progressive Edge Build measures how you continue to build edge angles throughout the turn. It's the first time advanced skiers can measure how well they hold that edge and create a tight arc in the snow.
Better coaching
This season, we’re targeting your learning plateaus. Improvement is at the heart of what we do, so it’s no surprise that we want progress to be continual, not a one off.
Active Coaching Mode assesses you at the beginning of every session and meets you where you’re at. You’ll get tips based on your performance that day. You wont unlock levels in ACM, instead, you’ll earn XP - a direct reflection of your effort and progress.
Better coaching
This season, we’ve given the tips and metrics of Carv an overhaul. You’ll now see what each metric is, with instagram-style short clips, how you can improve, and track your progress.
When you ski, you'll have more explanation content to help you understand how to improve. We recognise that to improve you’ll be learning new concepts with Carv, so we’ve worked hard to make easy and simple advice to put into your skiing.
Better coaching
We’ve rebuilt our audio tip system to give you more context, more empathy, and a more rounded approach to coaching you. There might still be the odd wine glass and banana in our tip system, but you’ll find a lot more content to walk you through what Carv is trying to coach you on, and how you can make that change in your technique.
Why we built it?
Learning a sport is extremely challenging. Improvement is often not linear, but sometimes you need to see things from a different angle to get that 'aha' moment..
This year Carv will give you more ways to understand each concept so you can improve faster in freeski.
Popular features
When we have an incredible day on snow, reliving it can be just as fun. We’ve brought in 3D navigation so you can explore your resorts - showing which run you scored your best on, and where you went in the day- all in a beautiful wintery design.
But more importantly, Carv will now predict which runs will give you the highest Ski:IQ based on other skiers in your resort. So tomorrow you can get out there and get after a new high score.
Popular features
We've given the referral system an overhaul so you can earn money off your next membership fee for every friend you refer. If you get to 5 referrals you'll even get some highly sought-after Carv Team goggles to show off with.
Check it out in your app, share the love and save on your renewal.
We're testing the upgrades now and plan to release the new system in mid-December.
As always, all of this is a free app update, coming to all members.
There's still time to grab one from our pre-Xmas batch.
