Mountain Master
Your Skiing Profile
At this level, you've probably read a couple of books on ski technique and are a little wary of the usefulness of 'fun ski quizzes' like this one. We'll happily rise to that challenge!
As an advanced skier with significant experience on the slopes, you'll already have a good idea of what you do well and where your weaknesses are. But there are always ways to gain fresh context about your skiing and look at things from a different angle.
We can always tighten up our turns, strive for greater smoothness, and hold our edges for longer in the turn to find a more rounded shape.
Carv is the world's first digital ski coach. Built with world-class instructors, Carv provides objective and accurate technique analysis as you ski.
We've developed Ski:IQ™ as a quantified score of your skiing technique. While we can only estimate your Ski:IQ™ based on the quiz, with Carv in your ski boots you'll be able to track your movements precisely, based on the 4 fundamentals: Balance, Edging, Rotation, and Pressure.
Technique Teardown
Here's how a run summary might look for you on the Carv app.
You'll notice that Rotary is greyed out. When Carv detects you're making advanced carving turns, the rotation of each ski becomes less important, so we focus on the other fundamentals.
Even at the most advanced level, two important skill areas to keep refining are Edging and Pressure.
The very best skiers are distinguished by their excellent edge smoothness - the ability to progressively roll onto the edges of their skis at high edge angles.
To improve your edge smoothness, imagine the ski is like a trampoline.
Increasing your edge angles progressively loads the ski until the apex of the turn, where you can then gradually release the energy.
Extending your turn duration by maintaining pressure on the outside ski will help you to create a more rounded turn.
At the midpoint of the turn, keep your ski tips facing down the fall line for a moment. It should feel like you are resisting your skis turning.
Increasing your edge duration will give you access to more sustained high edge angles, and more control throughout the turn.
Your next steps
Tip no.1
Early Edge Engagement
A skier of your level can consistently produce dynamic carving turns across the mountain. Mastering early edge engagement will increase your control.
Start toppling early in the transition from one turn to the next, letting your body fall sideways into the fall line.
This movement begins the process of early edging and pushes you to extend your edge duration and maximise your edge angles.
Tip no.2
Compare your Turns
The majority of expert skiers have a dominant side when skiing, but it can be difficult to address the issue without watching yourself ski.
Carv's technique analysis is very accurate at revealing biases in your technique which you're either used to or are too subtle to see. The real-time pressure and motion sensors look for differences in edging and pressure when you turn left or right to discover your weaker side.
