Keep reading for top tips to help you to make faster turns, and to build your confidence on varied terrain across the mountain.
Carv is the world's first digital ski coach. Built with world-class instructors, Carv provides personalised coaching and real-time audio feedback as you ski.
We've developed Ski:IQ™ as a quantified score of your skiing technique. While we can only estimate your Ski:IQ™ based on the quiz, with Carv in your ski boots you'll be able to track your progress against 4 fundamental skiing skills: Balance, Edging, Rotation, and Pressure.
Technique Teardown
Here's how a run summary might look for you on the Carv app.
At every technique level, there are key skills to master that will take your skiing to the next level. Two very important skill areas for you are Rotation and Pressure.
For great parallel skiing, your skis and legs need to be rotating at the same angle at the same time.
To keep your skis parallel as you turn, imagine you have headlights on your knees. Try and keep the headlights pointing in the same direction.
Pressure in skiing is all about keeping as much of your weight as possible on the outside ski, to maintain grip and engage your edges.
Focus on gradually building pressure on the outside ski right at the start of the turn, and your Carv pressure score will improve.
Your Focus Areas
Tip no.1
C - shaped turns
Smooth skiing requires patience and control when turning. Try to move away from abrupt Z - shaped turns, and aim to leave behind flowing C - shapes in the snow.
Push for smoother turns by counting through your turns as if you were dancing. 1, 2, 3, 4.
Count 1 to start the turn, then 2 and 3 as you are turning, and 4 to start transitioning into the next turn.
Tip no.2
Trust the outside ski
You'll make fast progress in your skiing if you can increase the pressure you put on your outside ski.
In order to improve your outside ski pressure, try a series of turns balanced more on the outside ski, and if you can - balanced entirely on the outside ski.
This can be scary at first, so we have developed the Outside Ski Training drill in Carv which takes you from balanced skiing to turns entirely on the outside ski using 20 levels and live feedback on each turn.
Tip no.3
Find your Flow
Skiing with flow is less tiring, and let's face it - better looking than making jerky turns.
