Quick start guide

Welcome to Carv

Let's get you skiing!

Your first day on snow

Carv has been designed to measure every movement in your feet. It analyses your pressure and motion 20 times a second to build up a detailed profile of your technique.

The data is recorded in your inserts (powered by the battery pack), and is sent to your phone using bluetooth where it is processed and turned into live audio coaching.

This guide is here to help you capture the magic of Carv in just a few hours!

Please install the insoles into your ski boot at home. You need to remove the liner of your ski boot to place them and it's easier to do this in the warmth of your house!

  • Once installed please perform motion calibration and pairing.
    • Motion calibration is also best done at home. The calibration lasts for months so don't worry about doing it again unless prompted.
    • Force calibration is best done on the mountain just before you ski, with your boots done up to 'ski-tightness' so Carv can accurately measure your pressure.
  • Charge the batteries fully before skiing. There is no on/off button (to preserve watertightness) however, your units will go to sleep if unused for more than 60 minutes.
    • To activate them again just unplug/plug in your insert cables and they'll wake up again.

  1. Ensure you have downloaded the latest app and paired your sensors before you get to the mountain.
  2. Please use headphones with Carv (any headphones work just fine, bluetooth or wired ones)
  3. In your phone settings allow location permissions for Carv. Use 'always allow' so Carv is able to record each run accurately using phone GPS.
  4. In Carv's own settings, under 'Data syncing' turn on 'Mobile + Wifi sync' to ensure you can get each run synced in real time as you ski. We set this to 'Wifi only' for most users as it saves data over the course of a season. For a fast-start use, you'll want your data processed live as you ski.

The Carv Modes

We've designed a few different modes to ensure Carv fits in your skiing day, whether you are cruising with friends or training a skill.

  • Free ski mode - the 'normal mode' we use most of the time. You start recording once, and leave it on all day. Carv is recording your data as you ski, building your technique profile. It gives you audio tips after each run - however, you can turn these off if you want to ski undisturbed.
  • Training mode - you can find this mode by switching mode from the record screen. Get real-time feedback on every turn to help you dial in a core skiing skills.
  • Monitor mode - this is a more advanced mode that tells you the live score of a specific metric on every turn - for when you're trying new techniques and want instant, detailed feedback.

You've charged, paired and installed Carv. You're calibrated and you've got your boots on and you're ready to ski. What now?

We recommend you start with FreeSki Mode.

  • Put your headphones in, take your phone off silent and turn up the vol. You don't want to miss your personalised audio tips!
  • Open the app and press the central 'record' button.
  • Press 'Start recording' to confirm.
  • Carv will say 'go get 'em tiger' or similar as you start your run. If you don't hear this, please double check your headphones and phone are connected.

Carv uses turn detection (by looking at your foot movement) and can detect if you are skiing in just a few turns. When you get on the lift, Carv will wait a few seconds then read out your Ski:IQ and give you a tip.

You do not need to stop recording after each run. Simply leave it running all day and keep listening out for your tips on the lift.

Once you've skied a few runs, you can review your data. Open the home page and you'll see a card for your recent activity.

  • Review each run to see how your technique stacks up.
  • You can click into each skill area to discover detailed technique metrics.
  • Select a metric to learn more about the skill and get video advice and recommendations to improve.

After your first day Carv will process all of this information to give you a recommended focus area for your next day on your home screen.

Training mode is our most powerful learning experience. It's perfect to try after a few runs, once you've got into the swing of things.

  • Training modes gives you real-time feedback after every turn, allowing you to make adjustments on the fly.
  • Jump into it by navigating to the record screen and changing mode on the bottom left.
  • We recommend you start with Outside Ski Drill for a simpler introduction to this experience. Play with your technique to pass/fail different levels. Its easy at the start but gets harder!
  • After you've had a go, try into Carving Training to see how Carv can blend multiple elements of a skill into this gamified format.
  • Training mode works by isolating a few core moves in skiing.
  • Carv is scoring every turn against the relevant metrics. You'll be moved through levels of varying intensity - Level 1-5 are beginner. Levels 15+ are hard, even for pros.
  • Carv is looking for you to pass 16 out of 20 turns and will give you tips to help you as you ski.

Want to an insight into how Carv works? Head to Monitor Mode

  • Open the record screen and change mode in the bottom left.
  • Choose a monitor that's relevant to your skiing. We suggest Edge Angle or Ski:IQ
  • This mode is reading out the raw data for these scores.
  • For edge angle, the pros can score above 80, but anything above 40 is really getting on edge!

This mode is intense, but incredibly useful to troubleshoot individual components of your technique - it's the preferred mode of ski instructors using Carv!

Head to the Training Tab to explore technique content, fitness routines, and ideas on how to use Carv from some of the best coaches in the game.

  • Improvement happens well before you hit the snow. Understanding your gear, the right moves, and getting inspired is one of the fastest ways to keep improving.
  • We're often releasing new content here to keep our members inspired every season.

What do I do if I get stuck?

Troubleshooting

We are confident you'll have a great experience, but sometimes a few hints can help you on the mountain if you get in a jam.

Do you see turns being counted? Press stop recording. Do you see the run has been recorded?

If so, Carv is working. you'll get audio feedback on the lift if you're using headphones and the volume on your phone is on

If you don't see turns being recorded, try a few things:

  • Check your Carv units are charged and connected
  • Try unplugging and replugging your cables/battery
    • Go to 'Set Up Carv' in your app to check the status
  • If it's connected, ensure you have pressed 'Record' -> 'Start Recording'
  • Ski a few turns to allow turn detection to kick in.

If you're in Free Ski mode, we've kept the feedback light touch. Head to Training Mode to hear turn-by-turn feedback.

Carv doesn't have an on/off switch to enable us to keep it robust in challenging conditions.

They are turned on either by charging them or by connecting them to your inserts before you ski
