Once your Pass is added to your Carv account, it will then activate when you first ski with Carv. If you don’t ski with Carv after purchasing the pass, it will automatically activate on April 30th 2025. After a year, your Pass will then automatically renew.
When you download the Carv app for the first time, you will be asked to create an account and enter a Pass code to add your pass to your Carv account. Please note, if you purchased during Pre-sale, your Pass Code will be sent to your purchase email on the 5th of November, when we launch the newest version of our app.
We do not recommend keeping the old version of the Carv app. Previous versions of the Carv app are not optimised for Ski:IQ Nevado and may present incorrectly.
My App
We've reprocessed all of your historic data in line with our new Ski:IQ Nevado Algorithm. This will be the algorithm calculating Ski:IQ this season. The algorithm is normalised so the majority of people stay the same, most people only change by 1-2 points, but a few scores may go up or down by up to 10 points. If you're disappointed by the change - we are sorry because we know how hard you worked for your scores! However, it’s important to update your historical scores to give you the best view of your progress season after season. We prioritize your improvement above all else - and if we can process your old data more accurately and give you a more accurate sense of your skiing, we choose to do that (even if your scores go down from last year). Hope this all makes sense, but please do let me know if you have any further questions!
This year, we’ve changed our turn detection algorithm to require a minimum of 8 turns. This was previously 6 turns. If your segment only has 6 or 7 turns, you may no longer see a Ski:IQ for this segment.
If you are still having issues, please swipe left with two fingers and select ‘Report an Issue’. Our customer success team will then be in touch as soon as possible.
All of your historic sessions will be reprocessed in line with the new Ski:IQ. Your sessions may take a few minutes to download from our server depending on the speed of your internet connection and the number of sessions on your account.

You will not be able to see pressure in the latest version of the Carv app.
Our first generation, Carv 1, utilised foot pressure measurement and, with a good setup, it accurately measures the underfoot pressure through the boot. However, retrofitting perfectly to every ski boot with a simple installation is challenging, and the result is the quality of data between boots varies significantly. The result is historically we have had to carefully treat the pressure data to mitigate for the discrepancies.
Despite the improvements we made, we found motion-based metrics to consistently outperform those from the pressure sensor, even when measuring forward movement of your centre of mass. By focusing on motion data, we’ve made a breakthrough—Ski:IQ Nevado is now more accurate across all conditions. With enhanced balance metrics, pitch detection, and snow surface identification, we're delivering the best data yet, and these improvements are available on both Carv 1 and Carv 2.

We found that acceleration data is very useful because it has a high correlation with the way you lean forward and back during the turn in relation to your skis.
The Early Forward Movement & Mid-Turn Balance metrics look at the changes in acceleration along the length of the ski (fore aft). Our interpretation of them involves making assumptions about the movement of the COM constrained by the dynamics of skiing.
- Early Forward Movement measures the percentage of fore aft acceleration increase that happens in one movement during transition. Our interpretation of this is that when you project your centre of mass diagonally over your skis in transition (Early Forward Movement), we measure how your skis catch back up with your Center of Mass.
- Mid-Turn Balance measures the percentage Fore:aft acceleration decrease that happens in one movement during the turn. Our interpretation of this metric is that it measures how fore aft acceleration decreases after the skis have caught up & past the centre of mass, creating grip along the full length of the ski.
- Turn Transition / Vertical Pressure Release measures the percentage of vertical acceleration released in turn transition. Our interpretation of this metric is that when you are able to be weightless in transition, this metric will be high.

Progressive Edge Build is now Mid-Turn Edge Build, the metric is the same but the name has changed to indicate that the metric is focussed on the middle part of the turn.
Edge similarity is now Edging similarity - this metric is the same but the name has changed to indicate that the metric measures the similarity in the rate of change.
Early Forward Movement - this is a new computation based on acceleration, but a similar concept to the prior version based on pressure.
Mid-Turn Balance - this is a new computation based on acceleration, but a similar concept to the prior version based on pressure.
Transition Weight Release - this is a new metric measuring acceleration in the vertical plane during the turn transition.
Outside Ski Pressure, Pressure Smoothness, and Early Weight Transfer have been removed.
For more information on our new metrics, head to your App Store (iOS) or the Google Play Store (Android) and install the latest version of the Carv app.

One of our main goals this year was to simplify the product experience because feedback from our users was that Carv was hard to navigate and it was challenging to know which feature to use when. Train with an Olympian was a wonderful mode, but we took the ethos of it (stepped levels of difficulty) and integrated it into the 'turn by turn' coaching, which has the added benefit of adapting to the snow type as you ski.
This season, you can choose from audio feedback presets to achieve the same coaching as we previously had in Monitor modes and Active Coach. Want to hear something different? You can further personalise your coaching experience to suit you. Just hit ‘Start’ to begin recording your runs, you’ll get Ski:IQ scores and Tips as you ski, and you can customise the Audio Coaching you receive at any time.
We are currently working on a progression pathway that shows your improvement over time, inspired by Train with an Olympian, but it will have a wider remit than just carving skiing.
There are a few steps to calculating the Ski:IQ. Firstly, it's important to understand what a segment is, it is all the turns from the stretch of skiing beginning when you start to move and ending when you come to a standstill. How we calculate Ski:IQ on a segment:
- For each turn we calculate metrics (e.g. max edge angle, edging similarity, but also metrics that are responsive to the difficulty of the slope you are skiing). We combine these metrics into a Turn:IQ.
- After that we discard turns that are well below your ability in the rest of the segment. These are often your first and last turns and will appear as grey dots on the map.
- The Ski:IQ of your segment is the average (median) Turn:IQ of those remaining turns

Using Carv 1 and Carv 2
With Carv 2 / Ski:IQ Nevado, when you're skiing powder or moguls, Carv won't penalize you with lower Ski:IQ scores like in previous versions. Instead, the system will adapt to the terrain, scoring you on the right skills for each terrain, and providing relevant tips and insights to help you perform better.
The first step was to create an AI classifier of terrain. This is an algorithm that must run in real-time on the phone to assess which type of terrain you’re skiing on.
To train the algorithm, we collected 11,000 video sessions across a range of terrain and we had these labeled by world-class instructors. But most importantly, we also used everything you all submitted over the last few seasons. Each time you scored terrain for us, it helped us make Carv better – and we couldn’t be more grateful to you all.
Carv now detects the snow surface, as you ski!
After a lot of work, we’re pleased to report that the classification algorithm is now 91% accurate across terrains. And it will only improve from here.
The algorithm that determines the difficulty of the snow that you are skiing on mostly looks at whether the snow is impacting the free movement of your skis (for example deep snow or large bumps). This means that for example icy conditions will not be detected
As of writing, it’s great in almost every case, but we need to gather more data to solve for some ambiguous snow surfaces – for instance, imagine a groomed trail that had just had 5cm of powder fall on it. However, it’s something we can update as we go, so it will keep improving the more the community skis with Carv.
Of course, accurate terrain classification is all well and good, but the really great part is that now Carv can detect the terrain, it can adjust which metrics it scores you on, and give you coaching that is more suited to the snow you just skied.
That’s great because most of us really want coaching when we find our technique unravels a bit – and that’s largely when we get into harder terrain.

Yes! Whilst Carv has not been optimised for indoor use and we do not officially support it, skiing detection is now possible indoors as we have changed our turn detection to no longer require GPS.
Any functionality that still requires GPS such as measuring speed and distance is often not possible when skiing indoors. Usually, you will not receive chairlift tips on indoor lifts or button lifts as this requires GPS to detect your change in altitude.
When skiing with intermittent or no GPS signal, your phone may not pick up a resort, or pick up an incorrect resort. Unfortunately, we are unable to change this retrospectively. If you would like an incorrectly recorded session to be deleted, please contact our customer service team.
No, we’ve worked hard to make the app experiences consistent across both sets of hardware.

Yes, you can use both Carv 1 and Carv 2 on the same account. However, keep in mind that you won’t be able to use both devices at the same time.
Head to the Carv app, More > Setup, and choose which version of Carv you’d like to use. If you’re already paired to Carv 1 or 2, you’ll need to first unpair.
Go to More > Setup Carv and select the version of Carv that you’re paired to
Carv 1
Click on the icon of the battery pack and the ‘Pair’ tab. Click Unpair
Carv 2
Click on the cog in the top right hand corner. Click on Unpair at the bottom of the screen.
If you cannot see these options, head to your App Store (iOS) or the Google Play Store (Android) and install the latest version of the Carv app.
We would recommend updating the Carv app as soon as possible. The previous version of the Carv app is not optimised for Ski:IQ 24 and so your data may not present correctly.
