What is Carv?
Frequently Asked Questions
Ski:IQ™ is a measure used to assess your skiing ability. This year* Carv calculates Ski:IQ™ using machine learned weightings of the 10 performance metrics which allows Carv to adjust which metrics to prioritise in your score, based on your skiing, the pitch and the terrain.
Different runs, and different skiers, may have different metric weightings used to calculate your Ski:IQ™, ensuring that our coaching is relevant to your level, and the terrain you’re skiing.
* These features will be available in the Carv app beginning November 5th 2024
The Carv app and instruction is currently only available in English.
We will be looking to translate Carv into other languages in the future, but we are currently focusing on really nailing the instruction in English before we commit to translating the product into other languages.
Carv is designed for a range of abilities, from early intermediate level skiers all the way through to advanced skiers and instructors.
If you are a complete beginner and have never skied before, we suggest you take a few lessons to become self-sufficient on the mountain. You will need an in-person lesson to teach you the fundamentals of skiing, as well as to catch you if things go wrong! After you have got the basics Carv will be perfect to help you improve and really nail down your technique.

There is no version of Carv currently available for snowboarding.
Yes - Carv goes wherever you go!
Last season, we introduced terrain detection. So, Carv can automatically detect the difficulty and snow type that you're skiing on - taking into account steepness and terrain variability (bumps, variable, powder). Carv will adapt your score based on the terrain so you're always rewarded for keeping your form when things get dicey.
This year, we’ve been working hard on improving our coaching to suit the snow. So, whether you’re in powder or bumps, we’ll be able to provide terrain specific coaching that’s relevant to you!
No, Carv uses bluetooth to function. All of your tracking, analysis, and coaching occurs on your phone without the internet.
Internet is required to upload your data to our server. When you connect to the Internet, you’ll appear on our leaderboards, your runs will be visible from your activity page. By going to “Settings” > “Data Syncing”, you can choose whether you want your activity data to be uploaded using mobile data or only when connected to Wifi.
Carv 1
We would always recommend installing your Carv Inserts into your ski boots before travelling in order to prevent them from getting damaged during transit.
As for your Carv Battery Packs; each Battery Pack contains a lithium polymer battery, so remember to store these in your hand luggage when travelling by air. Certain airlines will require you to declare capacities in order to fly with batteries in your hand luggage. The Carv battery capacity is 720mAh per Battery Pack.
Carv 2
Your Carv Sensors each contain a lithium polymer battery, so remember to store these in your hand luggage when travelling by air. Certain airlines will require you to declare capacities in order to fly with batteries in your hand luggage. Their battery capacity is 300mAh per Sensor.
Whilst Carv has not been optimised for indoor use and we do not officially support it, skiing detection is now possible indoors as we have changed our turn detection to no longer require GPS.
Any functionality that still requires GPS such as measuring speed and distance is often not possible when skiing indoors. Usually, you will not receive chairlift tips on indoor lifts or button lifts as this requires GPS to detect your change in altitude.
When skiing with intermittent or no GPS signal, your phone may not pick up a resort, or pick up an incorrect resort. Unfortunately, we are unable to change this retrospectively. If you would like an incorrectly recorded session to be deleted, please contact our customer service team.
iOS
Carv requires a minimum of iOS 16 or higher, though we always recommend that you use the latest version of iOS.
Android
Carv requires a minimum of Android 9.0 to run, and your phone must support Bluetooth 4.2.
Your device must have Google Play services installed. To read more about android compatibility please see our in depth article here.

Skiing with friends or family? You can turn off Audio Feedback altogether and check out your data on the lift, at the end of the day, or whenever suits you.
How does Carv work?
There are two Carv Sensors - one left and one right - that clip onto any Ski boot. The Carv Sensors contain:
- A gyroscope and an accelerometer - enabling us to capture the movement of your boots through sensor fusion and measure your skiing
- A rechargeable battery powered by USB-C
- A bluetooth module which transmits the skiing data to your phone
Designed for durability, the Carv Sensors are water-resistant and snowproof, with a 5-day battery life, so they’re built to withstand even the most demanding ski adventures.
Start by downloading the Carv app from the App or Google Play store. Upon making a Carv account, you may be prompted to enter your Carv Pass Code, received via email after purchase.
If ordered through Pre-sale, your Pass Code will be emailed to you on November 5th, when we launch our newest version of the app.
From here, click 'Setup' and you'll receive a step by step guide to getting started with Carv. Once you’ve done this, you’re ready to hit the slopes!
Just hit ‘Start’ to begin recording your runs. You’ll get Ski:IQ scores and Tips as you ski, and you can customise the Audio Coaching you receive at any time.

Carv clips onto any Ski boots: alpine, touring, even rental boots! We recommend clipping the Carv Sensor anywhere on your power strap. If you don’t have a power strap, you can clip Carv onto your buckle or carrier straps. Alternatively, you may wish to purchase a power strap.
On Mountain Skiing
Carv goes wherever you go! It is suitable for all terrain.
Last season, we introduced terrain detection. So, Carv can automatically detect the difficulty and snow type that you're skiing on - taking into account steepness and terrain variability (bumps, varible, powder). Carv will adapt your score based on the terrain so you're always rewarded for keeping your form when things get dicey.

Off Mountain Skiing
Whilst Carv has not been optimised for indoor use and we do not officially support it, skiing detection is now possible indoors as we have changed our turn detection to no longer require GPS.
Any functionality that still requires GPS such as measuring speed and distance is often not possible when skiing indoors. Usually, you will not receive chairlift tips on indoor lifts or button lifts as this requires GPS to detect your change in altitude.
Carv often does not work on ski machines as it measures your movement relative to a stationary surface.
You can use Carv on dry slopes
