Releases
This release includes the replacement of the Training tab with a Coaching tab, enhancements to the Ski tab to align with the Coaching tab, and 60 new audio tips.
Coaching tab:
Provides a summary of recent performance against target zones for the next Ski:IQ ability level to provide a simple guide of where to work to improve Ski:IQ
Recommends three focus metrics in rank order to improve Ski:IQ based on the recent performance summary
Ski tab enhancements:
Allows selection of “Recommended” for the “Focus Metric”
When this is selected, Carv will automatically cycle between the recommended metrics from the Coaching tab based on your performance
New audio tips:
60 new audio tips have been added across the different metrics
Key bug fixes:
Tips when Ski:IQ is selected as the Focus Metric are now properly labeled based on the metric that they refer to and properly link to that metric. This fix only applies to newly created tips.
This release improves audio coaching, adds the ability to edit snow conditions, and integrates legacy modes (e.g. Train with an Olympian) into the Ski tab.
Improvements to audio coaching:
Provides more feedback after each run about progress on the Focus Metric toward Target Zones
When the Focus Metric is set to “Auto” in the Ski tab, rotates the Focus Metric more frequently based on performance
Ability to edit snow conditions:
Allows snow conditions to be edited at the session, run, or segment level
Allows selection of a high-level category (Smooth, Uneven, Moguls, or Powder) or a more detailed sub-type (e.g. Icy as a sub-type of Smooth)
Integration of legacy modes into the ski tab:
Allows for easy switching between all Coaching modes in one place
Removes legacy modes from the Training tab (This was just a temporary location that allowed us to make them available even before they were integrated into the Ski tab.)
Assorted bug fixes and performance optimizations
This release includes our Train with an Olympian mode for carving training, improvements in the view of your ski day, and a number of bug fixes.
Train with an Olympian:
Made available on the Training tab with other legacy modes.
Updated to use Edging Similarity, Early Edging, Mid-Turn Edge Build, and Edge Angle as the progression of metrics to be optimized.
Mid-Turn Edge Build (formerly known as Progressive Edge Build) was developed with Ted Ligety and was intended to be in the initial version of Train with an Olympian but was not ready in time. Now it is a key part of the mode and replaces Outside Ski Pressure.
Improvements in view of your ski day:
Session blocks added to show the start of each session. These will allow editing of skis/boots, snow conditions, and notes for the session in the future.
Coaching Mode indicator added for each run. (Previously, the Coaching Mode was only displayed each time that it changed.)
Coaching Tips updated to be more visible.
Focus Metric color (light yellow) and iconography (bullseye) added throughout views.
Indication of whether the Focus Metric was recommended by Carv or chosen by you added to each segment.
This is an exciting release with enhancements to Carv’s coaching experience, availability of a number of legacy training modes, and important bug fixes. We now also have a User Guide that will be updated with each release to walk through the capabilities of the app with visuals.
The following changes aim to optimize the Carv coaching process for improving skiing technique and Ski:IQ™. You are provided with a recommended Focus Metric, scored on that metric, and provided with tips to improve that metric, both in the Real-time Audio Coaching and in the app.
New Algorithm: Focus Metric recommendation (shown in the Training tab, listed as “Auto” in the Ski tab, and heard in the audio) is optimized and addresses issues with G-Force and Edge Angle being recommended too frequently.
UX Enhancement: Ski Tab UX makes it more clear where to click to change the Coaching Mode and your Focus Metric.
UX Enhancement: Ski:IQ & Tips mode now provides your Focus Metric Score at the end of each segment in addition to Ski:IQ. It also provides a summary of your progress on the Focus Metric at the end of each run before providing a tip. As always, you can choose Custom if you want to personalize any of the parameters.
Bug Fix: Focus Metric Score now appears for each segment of skiing in the view of your day.
Bug Fix: All tips that you hear in Real-time Coaching are now visible in the view of your day and are more clearly clickable to get more coaching.
UX Enhancement: More details about your Focus Metric are shown in each skiing segment along with a link to coaching on how to improve the metric.
Bug Fix: Turn by Turn analysis for each skiing segment now defaults to your Focus Metric.
Six of our legacy training modes are now available in the Training tab until we finish new training modes that are integrated into the Ski tab.
Carving Training
Pivot Slips
Edge Angle Challenge
Fast Turns Challenge
Edge Angle Streak

Other important UX enhancements and bug fixes:
UX Enhancement: Turn visuals for Rotary, Edging, and Balance in the view for each skiing segment now have a quantitative scale so that you can see the magnitude of the measurements.
UX Enhancement: Tips that explain the definition of a metric are no longer repeated each time that a new Focus Metric is selected.
Bug Fix: Real-time Audio Coaching issue where it would restart or turn on when set to off (when a sensor Bluetooth disconnection/reconnection happened) has been addressed
Bug Fix: “Minimum of 8 turns required for Ski:IQ™” message appearing when there were more than 8 turns has been addressed
Bug Fix (Android): Video Coach issue with linking to users to record them has been addressed
Bug Fix (Android): Groups issue where invitation links went to getcarv.com rather than to the app have been addressed
Bug Fix (Android): Facebook login failure has been addressed
- Bug Fix: Turn by Turn Analysis now appears for segments with fewer than 8 turns again
This release focused on bug fixes and targeted UX improvements:
- (iOS and Android) Simplified the interface in the Ski tab for Real-Time Audio so that the Focus Metric can only be selected in the Ski tab an not in the Audio sub-menus. This also fixed an issue where it was possible to choose an unsupported Focus Metric for some Audio modes through the sub-menus.
- (iOS and Android) Fixed ability to see/read Ski:IQ values for individual turns in the map on the day view.
- (iOS and Android) Fixed an issue for users with Carv 1 sensors that was blocking them during the Zeroing Motion setup step.
- (iOS and Android) Made further improvements in accuracy of the pitch detection algorithm.
- (iOS and Android) Added additional information about the user's Carv Pass each place that it appears in the app.
- (Android) Decreased the time lag before user data from a ski session is visible after an app crash. After an app crash during a ski session, there is a time lag between restarting the app and the user seeing their data from the crashed session due to necessary data processing. This often leads to users believing that they have lost the data from their session when they have not. Although the time lag was decreased with this work, additional work is needed to show a status message during the processing.
- (Android) Fixed a bug where users received a message saying “No runs detected” after ending a short ski session, even though runs were detected. This was only an issue with short ski sessions.
- (iOS) Fixed a bug on iOS 18 (not on prior versions) where clicking on any metric to view the metric details view crashed the app.
